Voting Question: Why not land on the sun?
I have thought about this for years - a spacecraft built with the proper materials and technologies ought to be able to get very close to the surface of the sun and maybe even land on it. For one thing, the surface of the sun is 5800 fahrenheit, 300 degrees below the melting temperature of tungsten. Massive heat insulation should be able to protect a small area inside the craft for electronics. A magnetic field produced by the craft ought to be able to hold electrified plasma gas away from the surface of the craft to further reduce contact of the craft with gases. If the sun's surface is a dense gas or a liquid, the craft ought to be able to deploy a big boat-like bottom surface with which to float on the surface of the sun. Would this work? If not, why not?
Ben - what is your comment even supposed to mean? Sounds like you might have issues...
Devonn - I've got a few more space travel ideas even more interesting, including one where we can get to other solar systems within our lifetimes, but I am wanting to write some papers and throw them up online. I thought this one was a fun easy question to throw out to let others chew on it.
Anakin - whenever we go send a mission out somewhere, we discover a lot of cool things we never imagined we would. What would make the sun any different?
Vincent G - so what you are saying is that we can get pretty close though. Am I right? Setting up a huge magnetic repulsive field would let the craft come within, say, 10,000 miles of the surface. With a strong telescope on the craft, one should be able to spot objects on the surface as small as a hundred meters.

Resolved Question: What do losers who have nothing thank God for?
I have a house, two cars, an attractive wife, a job, savings, great health, a boat, a lot of electronics, great clothing, so I make sure to thank God every day for all that I have!
But I wonder, what about a loser who doesn't have a home or a car or a wife or any savings or good health or anything else, what does he thank God for?
I thank God for my health, but what if I were a deaf-blind quadriplegic?
I thank God for my beautiful house, but what if I were homeless?

Resolved Question: Are marine instrument displays too bright?
Most of the marine electronics I've dealt with seems to be well lit for twilight, but *way* too bright for night use. My friend and I used to carry sheets of colored film with us when we went on board a boat so we could dim down the displays. On my own boat not only did I have screen overlays but on an Apelco Loran C and a JRC radar I went inside the case and dimmed the lights illuminating the operating buttons. What's your experience?
My experience has been with old Raytheon and Furuno CRT radars, a monochrome CRT video sounder, all of which needed colored overlays to tone them down.
Apelco LCD Loran plotter (yeah, they shut the system down, boo hiss) with two illumination levels, needed overlay on screen and going inside to cover the lights illuminating the touchpad.
Apelco LCD radar, three light levels, way too bright and no inverse video. Also a POS radar but that's another subject.
JRC LCD radar, ten light levels plus inverse video (light target on dark field). Still wanted a red overlay on the screen. Buttons were lit by fixed-brightness LEDs, had to go inside and add resistors in line to mute them.
Garmin GPSmap 76 handheld monochrome LCD GPS - one light level, quite dim. Not too bad.
PC with Fugawi charting software - Fugawi has an alternate palette for night use that cuts direct illumination very nicely. Still a lot of off-axis light coming from the screen but that's not Fugawi's fault a
Gents, I've been intimately familiar (on one notable occasion more familiar than the factory repair center) with every piece of gear I've ever used, and as you can see I've physically modified some of it. I'm not asking for advice but rather for a broad overview of experience as to whether the factory-provided dimming facilities are sufficient for night running, because in my somewhat limited experience they are not. On my own cruising sloop and on other vessels I've had to modify or adapt or both to get the light levels down to where they do not disturb my night vision, with both CRT and LCD displays, and a friend of mine with rather wider experience reports the same. As I said, when the two of us went aboard a strange boat we carried sheets of colored film in the expectation of having to use it.
I've seen boats driving around at night with big color video sounders or whatnot running at brightnesses that terrify me because I know that the operator can't

Resolved Question: can anyone please review my short essay for me?
ok i wrote this essay for english 11, someone please review it for me! thanks
Some might say a good life does not have to be complicated, but I believe there are a few complications on the way. A good life is viewed as having money, fancy material things, great friends and a perfect marriage but this may not come easy to people who strive for this life. It may not be simple to live your ideal life.
When a person has a good job and has done well in school they are viewed as successful. When thinking about an ideal life, a person would have gotten into a great school and from there pursued a fantastic career. You receive pressure from your parents, and even the media to live your best possible life which seems cant be done without a high paying job to support the living habits that would be considered a good life. Without the benefits of high pay a person might not be able to afford to buy all the material things that would come along with have a ‘good life’.
When thinking about someone who possesses a perfect life, someone may think about them having a great group of friends and a loving spouse. People think of someone successful with their group of friends going shopping, gossiping over dinner, and have double dates with their just as successful spouses. Almost all the movies in the media end in a perfect relationship forming which seems like it will last forever. Achieving this is not always as wonderful and easy as it may seem, today it’s hard to find a marriage that is always perfect and friends that would never do anything to hurt each other and always have each others backs, making this situation also a hard one to grasp onto for someone in reality.
People cannot picture a perfect life without a supply of fancy cars, a beautiful home and all the latest fancy electronics. In a perfect world a family would live on a beach with their huge house, nice cars and a boat. In reality almost none of the population is able to possess these material things. When a kid at school has the newest electronic they are considered by the other kids to be having a great life, and they would be very popular. These situations in society make it hard for families who cannot afford such material things to be considered as successful, and living a good life. Anyone with money is considered powerful, and with power they can easily create the life they want.
This may not be everyone’s ideal life, but this is what is expected as a good life in society. It is difficult to achieve this lifestyle without the income and even family backgrounds, not everyone is bound to have this life and some would even find it horrible to live. To achieve a good life in today’s society all things are based on materialism, wealth and power. This is almost anyone’s goal, but few achieve it.

Resolved Question: what should I get my family for Christmas?
Lucia - Sister - Nine: Lulu is a tomboy and hates most things girly. She is quite sporty, but I don't want to get her sport equipment. She loves animals and is obsessed with pigs. She likes to make a mess and to play outside. She likes food, but is allergic to gluten. Lucia enjoys reading books about animals.
Mum - Mum is a very tidy, organized person who hates being late. She likes things like body lotion, bath salts and scented candles and hates mess. Mum loves clothes and shoes, but only expensive stuff so that is out of the question. Mum is the director of a research company and travels a lot. Mum likes reading either really depressing books or really cheesy love stories.
Dad - Dad owns a motorcycle shop. He is pretty go-with-the-flow and like mum he also travels a lot. Dad likes motor GP, motorbikes, boating, cars, jet skiing, electronics and magazines on these topics, but he doesn't like books that much, unless they are autobiography's about people he likes, but he has most of the ones he wants.
My budget is about $20-30 per person NZ dollar.
